Frame structure: When framing a large lino print on 52gsm paper, a robust backing board needs to be used to prevent central bowing. We recommend 10mm white PVC board, such as Palight or Foamalite. The frame moudling I use is 34mm profile with an embossed black finish.
Archival Materials:The print should be mounted with archival acid-free materials. All adhesive tapes for attaching the print to the mount or PVC board must be acid-free and archival quality. The mountbaord surrounding the framed artworks on my wbeiste uses Chalk White Jumbo Conservation Mountboard.
Mounting option 1:
Hinging Tape: The artwork is secured using archival hinging tape, a traditional conservation framing method that allows the paper to hang naturally within the frame (as shown in the framed Night Owl print on the left). This ensures the artwork can respond to natural changes in the environment. As with all professionally framed paper artworks, subtle natural undulations may occur. This is a standard conservation approach for paper artworks.
Mounting option 2:
Dry Mounting: Dry mounting is a professional framing method used to create a beautifully smooth, flat finish. The artwork is carefully bonded to a rigid backing board, providing excellent support and helping to protect it from moisture and warping. This technique is ideal for achieving a clean, super-flat and contemporary look and is commonly used for photographs and decorative art prints. As dry mounting is a permanent process, it is best suited to pieces intended for long-term display rather than future remounting.
The Mackerel print has been framed using this method.
Glazing: For larger framed prints or artworks, acrylic glazing is generally the best choice. Acrylic is lighter, offers greater flexibility, and is far more impact-resistant than glass. A 3mm UV-protective acrylic sheet provides ample protection and durability.
Both glass and acrylic are available in non-reflective options, though non-reflective UV acrylic glazing is widely regarded as the premium choice. While it is significantly more expensive, the visual results are exceptional; virtually eliminating reflections and allowing the artwork to be viewed clearly from any angle.
The Broc print (left) has been mounted using hinging tape. It is presented in a hand-stained natural wood frame, with a chalk-white mount board and anti-reflective UV-protective glass.
